One year ago, in such a day, we had our 1st Iranian flickr Gathering.

T H E – T E S T – I S – N O W – O V E R !
Though I had asked Serguei Mourachov – the interestingness algorithm producer and designer – to help me for evaluating the results of this test, but he’d preferred not to clearly answer me.
The strange part of test was this photo didn’t enter the Explore page even for a single hour, while you can see it seems to be it should enter it!
The experienced results by me are these (some are confirmed by flickr staff):
- Number of tags is not related to the ranking at all
- Number of groups, is not related to the ranking, if less than a constant number (some number between 5 and 15).
- Previous claim is not true for commenting like groups, they have some penalties.
- It’s important that WHO faves your photo or writes a comment below it. All flickr members have an hidden rank which is used as a weight or multiplying factor when they add a photo as a favorite or write a comment.
- The interestingness ranking inside your own photo-stream is not the same as the ranking used for flickr Explore.
And I have two guesses as the cause of the strange behavior of algorithm for this photo:
The first guess is the algorithm designer (magic donkey rider!) defined some weight factor for different type of referrers to the photo page. I mean, at least 2/3 of commenters and favers of this photo clicked a link I sent them via flickr mail, and this might be a big penalty.
And the second guess, which I believe is the correct guess, is a human hand which flagged this photo as "not for Explore" or as Ms. Champ said, "gaming".
I have at least two flickr staff in my contacts list, so when I asked all my contacts to contribute this test, they were asked too, and they simply had the ability to flag this!

I’ve always wondered about the aspects of Interestingness that you’ve been investigating with this little test… And for that matter, I’m glad you’ve been working with Flickr people on it as well – maybe they’ll take some of this empirical data into account in improving the algorythm…
